FICO Score Facts

You have the legal right to challenge factors which influence your credit score.
You can, and should, take control of your credit score – even if you’re not in the market for a home or auto loan. The Fair Credit Reporting Act gives you the right to access your credit report, learn your score and take action to improve it. One of the most effective ways to raise your credit score is to remove negative items from your credit report.

First, you need to know what is in your credit report. Get it free every year at www.annualcreditreport.com or get all 3 credit reports and scores free
Then, after you are armed with this information, you need to write to the credit bureaus and dispute the negative items. Here’s some free sample credit dispute letters.

Keep copies of all correspondence.
With time and effort, your FICO score will go up. Unfortunately, your score can go down quickly if you miss a payment or are late on a payment, but it takes much more time to get it back up.
